Many orangutans are killed as a result of human-orangutan conflicts. The adult orangutans are hunted and shot in the forest or killed when they enter plantation areas. The infant orangutans are captured and kept as pets or sold on the illegal market for wildlife trade. Save the Orangutan works to rescue, rehabilitate, and reintroduce the displaced and orphaned orangutans to their natural habitats.
The orangutans' last natural habitats are disappearing at an alarming rate. The rainforest is being cleared and destroyed for the benefit of palm oil plantations and mining, and large forested areas are being destroyed as a result of logging and forest fires. The remaining forests must be conserved. The forest areas that have been destroyed or cleared must be restored if the orangutan species is to survive in the wild. Habitat destruction, disease, the illegal pet trade, and poaching have taken their toll on their populations.
How can you personally help? Read labels when you buy food and other products. Palm oil plantations are contributing to habitat loss around the world — valuable forests are cleared to make way for these plantations. Orang-Artan Competition for the wild child in your life! Get creative and help rescue orangutans from the illegal wildlife trade, and this year our competition theme is "Wildlife of Sumatra The Orangutan Project relies on volunteers in every State to promote the organization and raise funds to go directly toward saving the endangered orangutan and its habitat.
The involvement of our wonderful volunteers enables TOP to raise critically needed funds for projects on the ground in Borneo and Sumatra. Most people find that it is easiest to help the orangutans and spread the word once they have lived and breathed orangutan conservation in Borneo.
